Madikeri: A mentally challenged man has died after he was found injured during police custody in Karnataka. Roy D'Souza died after he was released to his family in Madikeri. According to reports he was taken into custody after he was found roaming in the streets in Virajpet with a knife in his hand. A complaint was filed by the man's brother.
South zone Inspector General of Police Praveen Kumar did an inquiry and eight police officers were suspended. Kumar said the case will be handed over to Crime Investigation Department (CID). Virajpet residents led by Congress party members took to the streets and protested in front of the police station. Police said that Roy attacked a constable on the street before he was taken into custody. After three hours in custody, seriously injured Roy was handed over to his family. Even though he was given ventilator support at Madikeri hospital, he could not be saved, reports said.
