Bengaluru: A 10-feet-tall tomato cultivar was spotted in a horticulture fair held at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research. The cultivar was grown in poly house to produce high yield during the rainy season.
Price of tomato is skyrocketing as supply is low and the initiative would prove beneficial to cultivators.
In poly house, there is no variation in climatic conditions as well as no pests, enabling better produce. The plants need to be tied up and grown vertically. The split edges should be cut to enable faster growth.
The average yield of a 10-feet-plant is 10 kg. Cultivating tomato in a poly house is more expensive than growing tomato in an open area.
Vertical growth of the plant is the advantage of growing tomatoes in poly houses. Plants grow 10 feet in two months and 15 days and can grow to 30-feet in 12 months.
