Palamu: Twenty-five people were arrested in connection with smuggling of livestock and 19 vehicles, believed to have been used in the alleged crime, confiscated, official sources said.
They said the arrested are from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Bengal.
Acting on a tip-off that a number of animals were being taken from Bihar to Bengal and the trucks carrying them would pass through Palamu district, Assistant Superintendent of Police Vijay Shankar with his team reached the National Highway 98 and as he signalled to stop the suspected vehicles, they tried fleeing by crushing the officials under the wheels but were caught.
The ASP said that with this arrest, a whole network of animal smugglers has come to light. It was also learnt their associates used to keep a watch on police by patrolling roads in cars.
Further probe is on in the matter, he said.
