Ranchi (Jharkhand): After waiting for the government to provide them access to clean water for several years, impoverished villagers of Kharasia in Jharkhand's Ranchi district took up the stupendous task of digging and building themselves a well.
The villagers did not stop there, they also bought motors and fitted them to the well to ensure that the entire village gets accesss to the much-needed water.
Built with the money contributed by the residents of this quaint village, the well serves as an oasis in an otherwise water-starved area. The villagers use the water for cultivating crops apart from using it for their daily chores.
Before the construction of the well, the villagers had to travel long distances to fetch drinkable water.
Biswasi, a middle-aged residence of the village said, "Before digging up this well, we had to fetch water from a river flowing several kilometres away from this village, or we had to fetch rainwater flowing down a hill close to the village."
