Gumla: Five people were killed and several were injured in an accident that took place in Jharkhand's Gumla district, late night on Tuesday, officials said. A pickup van that was returning from a wedding, carrying around 55 people veered off road and overturned at least three times before it came to a halt near Jarda village, which is 90 km from the district headquarters.
Police said the bride's mother Lundari Devi, (45), and father Sundar Gayar, (50), who had been married off the bride earlier in the day succumbed to the injuries. The other deceased have been identified Pulikar Kundo (50), Savita Devi and Alsou Nagesia. The injured include two girls- 11 and 12 years of age and several aged 13.
Dozens were injured and the condition of 11 of them is said to be critical, police said quoting doctors treating them. The van was carrying the wedding party back home to in Katari village from Dumri's Sarangdih.
Eyewitnesses said that it overturned thrice after the driver lost control of the vehicle and the injured were rushed to the to Primary Health Center in Chainpur. Those who suffered grievous injuries were shifted to the state-run district hospital for further care.
Senior police officials reached the spot as soon as they got to know about the incident. The police from the Jari police station who responded to the distress call moved those who suffered minor injuries in the accident to a sub-health center in Chainpuri for treatment.
At the district hospital, the Deputy Superintendent of the hospital who was alerted by the police was waiting to receive the injured patients who were immediately rolled into the emergency ward. Three of them have suffered grievous injuries and are said to 'very critical'. The doctors treating them referred the trio to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).
