Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): At the time of abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, the Centre had promised that employment opportunities would be created in Jammu and Kashmir. However, a recent survey conducted by the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) shows the erstwhile state leading the table of unemployment.

According to a 30-day moving average survey conducted by the CMIE, "Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest level of unemployment in September compared to other states in the country. While Jammu and Kashmir topped the table with 21.6 per cent, Haryana and Rajasthan followed with 20.3 per cent and 17.9 per cent respectively."

"While the unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir was 21.9 per cent at the beginning of 2021, it improved to 14.2 per cent in February, 11.4 per cent in April, 12.1 per cent in May and 10.6 per cent in June was recorded," the survey shows.

The analysis of the CMIE report shows that while the unemployment rate improved from January to June, it, however, declined in September to below the national unemployment rate.

Apart from CMIE, according to the Directorate of Employment's 2020 figures, "three lakh registrations have been done in Jammu and Kashmir by postgraduate and PhD holders looking for employment."
