Srinagar: Kashmir's top police officer called on the family of ex-special police officer Fayaz Ahmad who was shot and killed by gunmen in Tral area on Sunday.
Ahmad died while being taken to hospital in Awantipora in Pulwama district, while his wife Raja Bano, 48 and daughter Rafia Jan, 25 died of their injuries later. The women were shot when they rushed to save him.
Inspector-General of Police Vijay Kumar expressed his condolences to the family and vowed to find and punish the killers as soon as possible. Kumar was accompanied by SSP of Awantipora Chaudhry Muhammad Yousuf.
"There was a militant movement in the area and last night two militants opened fire indiscriminately, as a result of which SPO Fayaz and his wife and daughter were also injured. They fired indiscriminately at the SPO. His wife and daughter came to rescue him, but were shot at. However, Fayaz passed away while being taken to hospital. It is the JeM which is active in the area, so it must be JeM," Vijay Kumar said.
Reports said militants stormed the home of Fayaz Ahmad in Hariparigam village around 11.15 pm and opened fire indiscriminately.
