Srinagar: In the wake of the Jamaat-e-Islami being declared "unlawful association" and union cabinet decision on Article 35A, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday imposed restrictions in parts of the city here to maintain law and order.

Senior separatist leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq was also put under house arrest and restrictions kicked in the old city area here.

The restrictions precautionary in nature were also imposed in south Kashmir's Anantnag town.

Speed of both Mobile and fixed broadband Internet services have been slashed in the valley to prevent exchange of inflammatory posts and pictures on the social media.

The union cabinet on Thursday recommended amendments to Article 35A to extend the benefit of promotion to in-service Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates and extend 10 per cent reservations to economically backward classes.

A statement issued by the union home ministry said the proposed amendments do not in any way affect article 370 or article 35A that gives power to the state legislature to define residents of the state and their privileges.
