Srinagar: A day after a Sikh girl from Srinagar's Rainawari area married a Muslim man in court, the Sikh community held a protest in the city, demanding that an anti-conversion law be imposed in Jammu and Kashmir like Uttar Pradesh.

Expressing their anger, the community staged a protest on Sunday in Srinagar's Baghat Barzulla area. Chanting slogans against the administration, they alleged that the Sikh community has "always been ignored" in Kashmir, adding that when they were seeking justice in the matter, the police also ignored them.

Apart from the Sikh community from Kashmir, members of the Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee also took part in today's protest. Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management committee's president, Manjit Singh Sirsa, also participated in the protest in Srinagar.

Talking with ETV Bharat, Sirsa alleged that Sikh girls are forced to convert their religion and then marry in Kashmir. "There have been many such incidents in Kashmir till date and Sikhs have always been ignored when they raise their voice," he said.

The protesters demanded that the anti-conversion law that Yogi Adityanath implemented in Uttar Pradesh should be implemented in Kashmir as well, so that marriage within different religions is banned here. The protesters blocked traffic near the busy Baghat Chowk, after which SSP Srinagar reached the spot and assured the protesters that their voice would be heard.

Yesterday, an 18-year-old Sikh girl had married a 45-year-old Muslim man in court, prompting protests from members of the Sikh community in Srinagar.
