Rajouri (Jammu & Kashmir): Those concerned about the plight of girls in Afghanistan should first raise their voice against the plight of girls in their own backyard, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief and former Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said on Saturday. "Speak about the girl children in the country whose modesty is being outraged and then cremated at night. Why does nobody question this?" she sought to know.
Her remark is seen as a veiled reference to the Hathras rape incident where the body of a Dalit woman, who was allegedly gangraped by four men and later killed, was forcibly cremated in the midnight against her family's consent.
Mufti was addressing a public gathering during her visit to Manjakote and Thannamandi in Rajouri. Assuring a holistic development in the Pir Panjal region, she She appealed to the locals to extend their fullest cooperation to the PDP. Mehbooba also invoked the name of her father Mufti Sayeed saying he was extremely fond of the region and that her party worked for the people of Kashmir even in times of militancy.
A large number of people from various panchayats of Badhal area participated in the gathering and registered their grievances.
While Mehbooba received a warm welcome, a section of the youths holding the tri-colour raised slogans against her and demanded that she goes back.
