Srinagar encounter: #ReturnTheBodies trends on Twitter

#ReturnTheBodies is trending on Twitter India and with over 9000 tweets has climbed to the top of the list. The hashtag surged hours after a graffiti in snow demanding the return of bodies of slain youth killed during a Srinagar gunfight went viral on Monday.

Srinagar: #ReturnTheBodies is among the top trends on Twitter India, hours after a graffiti in snow demanding the return of bodies of slain youth killed during a Srinagar gunfight went viral on Monday. Calling the Lawaypora gunfight "fake", Twitter users are demanding an investigation into the killings of the trio while sharing snow graffiti from south Kashmir.

With over 9000 tweets, #ReturnTheBodies may surge to the top of the list by the end of the night. The first graffiti 'Return The Bodies' was shared first by Yashraj Sharma, a journalist based in Srinagar.

In his tweet, Sharma while referring to the killings of south Kashmir youth during Srinagar gunfight said, "This is what it has all come down to. #ReturnTheBodies Photograph from somewhere in South #Kashmir." His tweet was liked by 2500 users and in no time the hashtag started trending in India.

The videos of slain youth Athar Mushtaq's father and his relatives protesting while demanding justice was also shared widely by the Twitterati.

Three persons - Aejaz Ganai from Pulwama, Zubair Lone from Shopian and Athar Mushtaq from Pulwama - were killed in an encounter at Lawaypora in Srinagar on December 30 while the police claimed that they were militants.

Earlier in the day, families of the three youths protested in Srinagar and demanded that the bodies of their children be returned to them. The police have not handed over the bodies to the families and instead buried them in Sonmarg.
