Srinagar: A mutilated body of a 70-year-old man was on Wednesday found from the forest area in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district.

Abdul Kabir Mir, a native of Waisa Banpora village (in Kupwara), had gone missing two days ago, police said.

His body was found from the forest with injuries on the neck and right side of the head, a senior police official said.

He said that some wild animal might have attacked Mir inside the forest and killed him.

The postmortem report would establish which animal attacked him and how he died, the official added.

The man-animal conflict is not a new phenomenon in Jammu and Kashmir. The continuous human intrusion into the forests have not only disturbed the ecosystem but have proved dangerous for the wildlife's habitat.

According to the Jammu and Kashmir wildlife protection department's estimate, 228 human fatalities and 3,350 injuries related to the man-animal conflict have been reported since 2006 in the Kashmir region alone.
