Srinagar: The incident of suicide by the son of a government teacher in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district over the pending salary of his father has sparked outrage in the Union Territory as political parties have demanded legal action against the officials.

The former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said that the administration should be held accountable for the death of the youth.

"A man sacrificed his life to highlight the plight of teachers like his father whose salaries have been stopped since 2018. J&K admin should be held accountable for his death & plunging such families into dire straits. Hope new CS (chief secretary) adopts a more humane approach, unlike his predecessor," Mufti tweeted.

Sohaib Mir, 25, an Engineering graduate from Avial village of Kulgam district recorded a video of before committing suicide, saying that his father, Bashir Ahmad Mir, a government teacher, had not been paid his salary for two and a half years.

"My father has been denied salary for past over two years and we are living a miserable life. There are many more teachers like him. So, I am sacrificing myself for all those so that they get their due,” Sohaib is heard saying in the video.

Mir's father, Bashir Ahmad Mir, was a former militant who was appointed as a teacher in 2008, but his salary was stopped in March 2019 after the police's criminal Investigation Department (CID) filed an "adverse report" against him.

District President Teachers Forum Kulgam Sheikh Intikhab Aalam said there are 25 teachers in the district whose salary has been stopped.

Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party and Congress unit of JK have demanded strict action against those officials whose "impervious attitude" resulted in this sad incident.
