G20 meet in Srinagar: Delegates to relish special millets dishes at Millets Cafe

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): In a year declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the International Year of millets, the visiting delegates of the maiden G20 meeting in Kashmir will be served with special millet dishes, a top official said. Speaking to ETV Bharat, Mission Director Jammu Kashmir Rural Livelihood Mission Indu Kawal Chib said that the Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihood Mission (JKRLM) and Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) will serve the delegates with millet dishes during the G20 meeting to be held in Srinagar from May 22-24.

It is pertinent to mention that millets are cultivated in four districts in Jammu and Kashmir. Mission Director JKRLM Indu Kawal Chib said the government wants to make the people aware about how many types of millets are grown in the country. “We have tried to have at least eight types of millet here and have also kept samples of the crop,” he said.

Significantly, the Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihood Mission (JKRLM) in collaboration with the Institute of Hotel Management has opened a special Millets Cafe inside the Sheri Kashmir International Convention Centre. The food from the cafe will be served to the delegates and other participants during the three-day G20 meeting in Srinagar.

Mission Director JKRLM Chib said that the cafe is being run by the women of the mission. Chib said that besides setting up a market in the lawns of the SKICC, the Millets Cafe will also highlight the role of the rural women of Jammu and Kashmir in transforming the economy. Syed Nadeem, General Manager of Grassroots Innovation Augmentation Network (GIAN) while commenting on the Millets dishes said, "Now that the world is moving towards healthy food, millets are the crop and food of the future.

When other countries continue to adopt healthy food, why not us? It contains all the minerals and vitamins." He further said, "We don't just want to empower women, we also want to make them healthy." Pertinently, the international delegates are arriving in Srinagar for the maiden meeting of the G20 "Tourism Working Group" to be held in Srinagar, the summer capital of the Jammu and Kashmir UT, from May 22-24.
