Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): The first batch of delegates for the maiden G20 meet in Kashmir landed at the Srinagar airport on Monday. “Atithi Devo Bhava. Delegates arriving for TWG (Tourism Working Group) G20 meet accorded warm welcome at Srinagar Airport. Jubilant Jammu and Kashmir welcomes them with open arms.

The 3rd TWG meeting is being held at Srinagar from May 22-24, 2023,” a spokesman for the Jammu and Kashmir government wrote in a tweet today morning. The post showed pictures of the delegates being welcomed with tilaks and saffron turbans at the Srinagar airport. Besides the delegates, Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant have also arrived for the maiden G20 meet in Kashmir to be held at the SKICC on the banks of Dal lake in Srinagar from May 22-24.

The international meeting, gains significance from the India's' perspective especially in the backdrop of the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under article 370 on August 5, 2019. A successful G20 in Srinagar will mark the return of normalcy in Kashmir valley since the eruption of armed militancy in the early 1990s.

As per officials, a total of 60 delegates from the member countries of G20 are going to attend the meeting in Srinagar. As per Chief Coordinator G20, Harsh Vardhan Shringla said India is halfway through its G-20 presidency and so far 118 meetings were across the country. Besides, delegates from special invitee guest countries who are attending the meeting.

Meanwhile, China has opposed the holding of a G-20 meeting in Kashmir, while Saudi Arabia has not registered for the event. Turkey has also decided to stay away from the Srinagar meeting.
