Deserted markets and empty mosques mark this Ramadhan

The coronavirus pandemic has had a severe impact on common lives. The holy month of Ramadhan which saw markets and mosques bustling alike every year has been marked with desolation this time around. The markets and the Jama masjid of Shopian are of many examples of this harsh reality.

Srinagar: The arrival of the month of Ramadan looked completely different this time due to the lockdown. The blessed month of Ramadan was welcomed amidst the wrath of the coronavirus and the lockdown. The historic Jama Masjid in Shopian district of South Kashmir is one of the many historic Jama Masjids in the country.

While there used to be complaints about the tightness of space due to a large number of worshipers at the mosque every Ramadan, this time due to the lockdown, this central mosque also appeared empty.

Due to the lockdown and the growing threat of the coronavirus, appeals were already made to worship at home. This year, Muslims, following the appeal of religious scholars, are engaging in worship at home with smiling faces in the blessed month of Ramadan.

Due to the wrath of coronavirus, the markets have lost their glamour. In Shopian town, mosques as well as markets used to be decorated from the month of Sha'ban to welcome Ramadhan, these markets are now deserted due to the wrath of coronavirus and the lockdown the followed. There is no traditional hustle-bustle in the markets. There is no sale of dates or fruits. People are nowhere to be seen.

Due to the lockdown, there is an eerie silence everywhere and people have stopped shopping for the month of Ramadan. However, this year it was seen contrary to the tradition. Even before the arrival of Ramadan, the shops in the town of Shopian used to be full of Iftar items, various types of dates, dried fruits, beverages and other items. However, this year saw the opposite of the tradition.

People are buying whatever is available locally for Iftar. In preparation for the month of Ramadan, some shops are opening in the evening and people buy essential items for sehri and iftar according to their needs.
