Tight security at Atal Tunnel ahead of inauguration

Security has been tightened in Atal Tunnel as PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 9.2 km long tunnel on October 3.

Manali: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 9.2 km long Atal Tunnel on October 3. The state government has ordered tight security in the wake of Prime Minister's visit.

The tunnel has been completely sealed for safety reasons. No movement will be allowed within the tunnel. The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has tightened security from South Portal to North Portal.

Neither BRO vehicles nor private vehicles will be allowed within the tunnel. On Sunday, visitors were sent back to Manali. About two dozen Special Protection Group personnel have reached Manali late on Sunday evening, who inspected the tunnel, the helipad and the site of a rally.

Separate teams of SPG will arrive on 29 September. Around 100 SPG officers and commandos will be present for the PM tour. Tunnel Chief Engineer Brigadier KP Purushothaman said that the tunnel has been sealed for safety. He said that in a day or two, the SPG team will further inspect the security of the tunnel.
