School waives off fees of Kuldeep's children who sold cow to buy smartphone

A man hailing from Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district had sold his cow for six thousand rupees to buy a smartphone for his children's online education. After ETV Bharat highlighted his plight, the school administration decided to waive off his children's fee for the upcoming academic year.

Kangra (Himachal Pradesh): Moved by ETV Bharat's report about Kuldeep Kumar, a resident of Kangra district who had to sell off his cow to afford his children’s online education, the school management had decided to waive off his children's fee for the academic year.

According to Kuldeep, his children were not able to attend online classes during the coronavirus induced lockdown as they do not have a smartphone, so he sold his cow for six thousand rupees only.

Kuldeep's plight evoked an overwhelming response as many people came forward to help his family. Some people wanted to provide ration, while some are willing to bear the expenses of his children's education.

Kuldeep has a daughter and a son who study in fourth and second class respectively. For the past several days, they used to go to the homes of other children of their neighbourhood, but couldn't continue for long.

Kuldeep's name was also removed from the below poverty line (BPL) list because of a condition which requires a person to work in MNREGA for at least 20 days a year in order to be eligible for BPL registration. Kumar said he has a back problem, due to which he cannot do manual labour, and therefore cannot work in MNREGA jobs.

Ramesh Dhwala, an MLA from Jwalamukhi, also reached Kuldeep's house and assured all possible help in view of the family's financial condition. MLA Ramesh Dhwala has also assured to make house and other arrangements for the family.
