16 died, 13 still missing in Kinnaur landslide

The death toll in the Kinnaur landslide has risen to 16 with the recovery of 2 more bodies today when the rescuers begin the search and rescue operation for the landslide victims. 13 people have received injuries of which two are said to be critical.

Kinnaur: Two more bodies were recovered from the Kinnaur landslide spot as the search and the rescue operation which halted on Thursday resumed at the break of dawn. With this, the total toll has risen to 16 so far in the landslide incident. Rescuers had recovered four bodies on Thursday and 10 on Wednesday while several others are still missing. 13 people have received injuries of which two are said to be critical.

Earlier on Thursday, Chief Minister Jairam Thakur visited the spot of the devastating landslide in Kinnaur district for an overview of the ongoing rescue operation.

After returning to Shimla from Kinnaur, CM Jairam Thakur briefed the house about the situation on the landslide spot. The rescue operation was halted on Thursday due to the continuous falling of stones from the hill, Jairam Thakur said adding that, he wanted to visit the spot just after the accident but he could not due to bad weather. The Chief Minister during his visit was accompanied by MLA Kinnaur Jagat Singh Negi and former MLA Kinnaur Tejwant Singh Negi.

Kinnaur DC, Abid Hussain said that relief and rescue work is going on. Home Guard, ITBP, Army and NDRF personnel are engaged in the rescue operation. Meanwhile, National Highway-5 has been restored.

Earlier in the district, nine tourists had lost their lives in a similar incident that took place in the last month. While another incident of the landslide has been reported in Nigulsari and the search and rescue operation on.
