Himachal HC orders closure of cow sanctuary after 1,200 cattle deaths

The Kangra-based sanctuary, which was established by the Himachal government on January 20, 2022, and sheltered 1,310 cows, was found negligent by the high court in rearing cows.

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh High Court has issued a notice to the state government for the closure of the Radhe Krishna Cow Sanctuary, where 1200 out of 1,310 cows have died in the past two years.

Earlier, a petition was filed in the High Court and a demand has been made to close the cow sanctuary and move it to another place. These deaths occured due to negligence of authorities, the court observed.

The sanctuary was established at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore in Kangra. In two years, 1,310 destitute cows were sheltered there. In this two-year interval, 1,200 cattle lost their lives due to malnutrition and disease. Similarly, recently on October 19, as many as 15 cows died in a single day due to neglect. The court has sought a response from the government and the Gau Seva Commission on the allegations made by the petitioner. The hearing on the case is scheduled for December 4.
