Chamba villagers fear for life as landslide risk increases

A village in Chamba, Manda is on the verge of being buried in landslide, yet government officials remain oblivious. As frequent landslides occur here, villagers sleep in the fear of loss of life and everything they have made in life.

Chamba: After repeated massive landslides, the condition of Mandoon villagers is quite pathetic as the government representatives and administration remain oblivious to it. Villagers say that a private project is going on just below the landslide-prone area. The construction work will disrupt the water flow in the ravine, worsening the dangers.

Chamba villagers fear for life as landslide risk increases

According to the villagers, they have reached out to everyone from the local MLA to the Chief Minister Jairam Thakur, but in vain. According to Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Manish Chaudhary, a report will be prepared and sent to the government so that concrete steps can be taken to secure the village.

Mandoon village is under Churah assembly constituency. There are 32 families living in Mandoon village and the total population is 250. The distance of this village is about 90 km from the district headquarters. Villagers say that they had approached the district administration for a solution, but till today it remains unresolved.

As sand got accumulated due to repeated landslides, merely 15 to 20 meters of gap is left between the village and the landslide-prone area. Many bighas of cultivable land have also fallen prey to the landslide. During the rainy days, the people spent sleepless nights as death and loss of everything is so near.

The risk of landslides is severe that the village can be beneath leaps of sand anytime. The whole village frets every single day as the occurrence of the landslide is very frequent on the lower side. The situation demands an immediate resolution or else the entire village will disappear, according to the villagers.
