Jhajjar (Haryana): Gaurav Sharma, an Indian Navy personnel who was martyred while on duty on May 19, was cremated with full state honours in his village in Haryana's Jhajjar district on Monday.
According to his relatives, Gaurav, who used to work in the Indian Navy as a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), was martyred while on duty on May 19, after the pressure kit on a Somalia-bound ship burst.
The martyr's mortal remains were brought to his native village of Kablana yesterday, escorted by scores of youth on motorbikes. Amidst patriotic slogans and an emotional atmosphere, the mortal remains of the martyr were consigned to the flames.
Several navy officers, local MLA Geeta Bhukkal, and Gurugram deputy mayor Gaje Singh Kablana were present at the ceremony, apart from various other leaders, who paid their respects to the martyr.
Troops from the Haryana Police and Indian Navy gave the martyr the customary gun salutes.
Martyr had got married just three months back
Gaurav's family said that he had been in service for the past eight years. An exceptional cricket and volleyball player, Gaurav was awarded multiple times by the Navy for sports. His family members said that the officer had just got married three months back in February.
Demand to rename stadium in martyr's honour
The visibly emotional villagers, requested the government to rename the local stadium in the martyr's honour, and also accord him with the Shaurya Chakra.
Jhajjar MLA Geeta Bhukkal also appealed to the government to provided all possible assistance to the martyr's family.
