Chandigarh (Haryana): On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the entire nation is not only remembering Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings, but also his contribution to the freedom struggle of India and the sacrifices he made.

On this occasion, a young artist from Chandigarh has paid his tribute to Gandhiji in the most unique way.

Artist Varun Tandon from Chandigarh has made a 25-feet-tall portrait of Gandhiji using salt.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Tandon said that this was the most important way to remember Bapu in a true sense as he started the Salt Satyagraha from Sabarmati for the Independence of the country.

Tandon told that it took 8 hours to make the portrait of Bapu. He said that first of all, Bapu’s picture was made on the base of black colour and after that, the salt was very finely scattered on it. Two kilograms of indigenous salt was used for the portrait.

"I still consider Gandhiji's teachings relevant to us. At that time, Gandhiji gave the slogan of 'Swadeshi Apnao Videshi Bhagao' (adopt the country’s produce and boycott the foreign goods). The country still needs to follow the same slogan," he added.

It is pertinent to mention that Tandon, originally from Jalandhar, Punjab, has been making portraits for the last several years.

Prior to this, he also made a portrait of Balbir Singh Sr. using pieces of hockey sticks. Apart from this, he has made a portrait of Dara Singh using Pinni, which is a type of Punjabi sweets.
