Chandigarh: The family of ace boxer Amit Panghal on Sunday expressed happiness after their son bagged a gold medal at the Cologne World Cup in Germany on Saturday without having to fight his final bout in the 52 kg category.

World silver-medallist Amit Panghal was given a walkover by his opponent, the German boxer Argishti Terteryan in the final match.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, the family expressed that they are proud of Amit's achievement while recalling how he was adamant to pursue his career in boxing despite everything.

"During the lockdown, Amit was at home and became frustrated due to lack of proper practise but he did not lose courage and clinched the gold medal. Amit's achievement has created an atmosphere of happiness in the whole village and there is a wave of congratulations everywhere," said Bijender Panghal, Amit's father.

"I am very happy for my son. He impressed everyone with his hard work and that got reflected in the form of results. Now we hope that Amit will also bag gold in the Olympics," Amit's mother Usha Panghal said.

Notably, two other Indians won medals too--Mohammed Hussamuddin and Gaurav Solanki winning bronze in the 57-kg category at the Cologne World Cup.
