Gujarat woman sold her eggs to live lavishly, threatened husband of dire consequences

A woman along with her mother has been booked on charges of illegally selling her oocytes as their trade is not allowed in India. Her husband told police that his wife had sold her oocytes numerous times to private hospitals between January 2019 and June 2022.

Ahmedabad: In a bizarre incident from Gujarat, a woman was booked for illegally selling her oocytes, the female germ cell involved in reproduction, after her husband alleged that his wife and her mother had entered the illegal trade to meet their lavish expenses.

In his complaint with the Amraiwadi police station on Tuesday, the husband stated that his wife had sold her oocytes numerous times to a private hospital between January 2019 and June 2022. In this, she was helped by her mother, he alleged.

According to the complaint, the accused Anita had changed her date of birth and got a fake Aadhar card to sell her eggs. In one of the hospitals, the accused had forged her husband's signature as a witness, though the complainant was never present at the hospital when she committed the offense.

The couple has been married for five years now, however, the relationship had turned sour in the last two years, and the woman was also having arguments with her in-laws. She compelled her husband to live in rented accommodation and he agreed to the same. However, her bickering according to her husband continued as she was not happy with his earnings and their lifestyle.

Agitated by it, the husband left her and went back to live with his parents in 2019. The woman filed a police complaint against him at Amraiwadi police station and also filed a claim for maintenance in court. Two years later, the couple reached an agreement and again started to live together until the husband came to know that between January 2019 and June 2022, his wife had been selling her eggs through an agent who had contacts in different hospitals in Ahmedabad.

When the complainant questioned his wife, she got very angry and called her mother who threatened to get him killed at the hands of her son if he "stretched the matter" or reported it to the police. The man, however, went ahead and filed a complaint against the two. Police booked the two for forgery and criminal intimidation. Commercial trade of oocytes is not allowed in India.
