Surat (Gujarat): The income tax department conducted a raid at BJP leader PVS Sarma's residence in Gujarat's Surat early on Thursday morning.

A team of I-T officials conducted searches at Sarma's residence in the city in a raid which lasted close to eight hours.

During the raid, the officials allegedly seized Sarma's phone, following which the BJP leader sat on a dharna outside his residence.

Pertinently, the raid came just two days after Sarma, the vice president of BJP's Surat unit, had accused a jewellery outlet in the city of money laundering during demonetisation.

"This is how idea of Demonetisation defeated by the corrupt. Cash deposit is ₹110 cr, income ₹0.84 cr & tax ₹0.80 cr. IT(Inv) wing closed eyes & Settlement Commission accepted illogical arguments & caused huge revenue loss," Sarma said in a tweet in which he tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Finance Ministry.

Sarma alleged that some "corrupt" officers and CAs, profited at the cost of the scheme and caused revenue losses to the government.
