Surat: Textile industry in Surat is now gearing up to produce special nylon polyester fabric for making parachutes and soldiers' bags. The special fabric was recently tested globally and certified by the Central government. The fabric was developed in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for 'Make in India'.
Central Ministry textile committee member Bharat Gandhi told ETV Bharat that the fabric’s quality is of international standard. "Entrepreneurs have imported state of the art machinery from Korea and Japan after lockdown. Repair looms and water-jet looms will also be imported", he said.

"The production of nylon polyester fabric will be boosted in Surat and the industry will contribute fairly in the defence sector. South India Textile Research Association, Bombay Textile Research Association have approved the fabric", he added.
With the initiative, the world-famous Surat textile industry is expected to contribute lion's share in the defence sector also. Till now, fabric for bags and parachute cloth was being imported from foreign countries including China. The country-based production will increase demand for the fabric in the defence sector. The textile ministry aims to make India self- reliant on this front. Being cost-effective and made in India, the fabric will also be introduced in the global market, according to officials.
