Ahmedabad: A sessions court of Jamnagar on Thursday sentenced Sanjiv Bhatt, sacked IPS officer from Gujarat and an accused in the over 30-year-old custodial death case, to life imprisonment.
The Supreme Court recently declined to consider a plea by Sanjiv Bhatt seeking fresh examination of witnesses in the case.
A vacation bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Ajay Rastogi, found merit in the argument of the Gujarat government and prosecution that all witnesses had been produced, and as a result, the trial had been concluded and it was nothing but a delaying tactic.
Along with him, the then PSI Shailesh Pandya, Deepak Shah, constable Praveen Singh Zala, Praveen Singh Jadeja, Anup Singh Jethwa and Keshubha Jadeja are the accused in the case.
The prosecution alleged that the case was related to a communal riot when Bhatt detained more than a hundred people and one of the detainees died in the hospital upon his release.
Police detained many people in communal violence in Jamjodhpur taluka of Jamnagar district over 30 years ago.
On October 30, 1990, police allegedly killed 133 people under TADA for allegedly spreading and waging violence during the curfew.
Prabhudas Madhavji Vaishnani and his brother Ramesh Madhavji were admitted to Gandhidia hospital in Rajkot for treatment on November 8.
Following which, Prabhudas succumbed to his injuries.
His brother Amritlal had sought permission to file a charge sheet in this regard and a further investigation began.
