Ahmedabad (Gujarat): As the pandemic situation is becoming grimmer by the day in Gujarat and the rest of the country, a 50-bed isolation ward has been created in the Ahmedabad Central Jail where at present 37 prisoners are receiving treatment.
In a telephonic interview with ETV Bharat, Ahmedabad Central Jail’s Dy SP DV Rana said all arrangements have been made in the jail to meet the coronavirus situation. All the corona positive patients are being sent to the civil hospital or the Samras Covid care centre while those with COVID-19 symptoms but have tested negative are being kept for 14 days isolation as a precaution inside the jail. Maximum number of prisoners have been found corona positive in the Ahmedabad Central Jail.
In Rajkot, 29 prisoners and 5 jail employees have become corona positive
The pandemic is spreading fast in Rajkot too with over 500 new coronavirus cases being reported every day.
As many as 29 prisoners and five jail employees of the Central jail have been infected by the deadly virus.
A separate hall has been designated inside the jail to keep all infected prisoners quarantined so that they do not spread the infection among other inmates.
Any prisoner showing symptoms of COVID-19 are subjected to rapid tests. Corona positive prisoners are sent to civil hospital for treatment and thereafter quarantine in the civic body’s night shelter.

Two patients die, two under treatment in Junagadh
Coronavirus pandemic has also stepped inside the Junagadh district jail. Three of the 421 under trial prisoners were found infected by the virus. One prisoner, who complained of difficulties in breathing, was shifted to the civil hospital where it was found that he was infected by the coronavirus. He died during treatment.
Three days before this another prisoner also died from COVID-19 while two others are under medical treatment.
In the coming days, testing and vaccination of prisoners will be conducted. It would be only after testing that the exact number of infected prisoners can be found.
No corona positive prisoner in Jamnagar jail
According to jail superintendent S Jadeja, none of the 360 prisoners in Jamnagar district jail have tested corona positive so far.
The health department frequently conducts tests in the jail. Any prisoner who falls sick is sent to GG Hospital for treatment where he is also tested for coronavirus. Two prisoners of the district jail were found corona positive 20 days ago. They were treated at the GG hospital and now both their report have come as negative.
