Ahmadabad: At a time, when the world is fighting the most destructive pandemic in the history, manager of a Khadi store at Imam Manzil in Gujarat's Ahemadabad has taken up the initiative of not only producing masks but has also pledged to distribute it among the people for free.
"We, the residents of Gandhi Ashram, have been wearing, weaving and selling Khadi for the last 102 years. When wearing a mask has become a necessity during the time of coronavirus, we have been making masks from Khadi fabric since last one week and have distributed them among the residents of the Ashram free of cost," said Dhimant Badhiya, the store manager.
He further said that nothing can be better than Khadi when Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls for the adoption of swadeshi.
The Khadi cloth is eco-friendly and the loom used in the making of the cloth combines the threads in such a way that allows maximum air to permeate, which is very soothing, especially in summers.
Reviving the essence of Khadi fabric, which has played a major role in achieving independence, Badhiya is producing 100 masks a day along with his co-workers and has given away 1300 masks so far.
"There are over 1,200 people residing in and around the Ashram along with their families. A unique feature of these masks is that they are in different colours including white. We have so far made 3,000 masks of which over 1,300 have been distributed free among the residents of the Ashram." he added.
This comes at a time when PM Modi stressed on the importance of promoting local products under his self-reliant India mission on Wednesday.
