Surat: A mobile application of the Surat municipal corporation is proved to be very helpful in controlling the spread of coronavirus pandemic. The application- Gemini- was used even before the advent of coronavirus to collect information on common diseases.

But after the pandemic started spreading rapidly, the app is being used for monitoring and putting in place a definite plan of action to contain the pandemic. By using this application, all the civic body officials were able to reduce the ill effects of the pandemic. This is a one of its kind application in the country which keeps an eagle-watch on the corona pandemic.

The speciality of this App is that doctors of all private hospitals and clinics submit to the municipal corporation details of all patients that come to them with complaints of common fever, cough and cold.

The municipal corporation has made a simple arrangement with all the private medical practitioners in the city to upload information about their patients. This helps the municipal corporation to give medical treatment to those patients who have the symptoms of COVID-19. The information also becomes useful in preventing the spread of infection to others.

The App also helped in deciding containment zones

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Surat municipal commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani said city officials can also gather information about people who tested for covid. They can also know which areas have more number of corona cases. This helps the municipal corporation in taking appropriate decisions and steps. The municipal corporation also used to develop a forecast model to make preparations with regard to the need for medicine, hospital beds, equipment etc. The App was also very useful in deciding containment zones, saving much effort of the civic body in carrying out the survey. This is the only city where digitalisation has succeeded in reducing the spread of the pandemic.
