As Cyclone Biparjoy made its landfall in Gujarat coast, it wrought havoc in the lives of denizens living in the coastal regions of Saurashtra and Kutch with rainfall and storm surge as it lay centered in the land before its projected petering out on Friday evening.

Cyclone Biparjoy | IMD predicts more rains as storm weakens, two killed in Gujarat floods

Ahmedabad/New Delhi: As Cyclone Biparjoy made its landfall in Gujarat coast, it wrought havoc in the lives of denizens living in the coastal regions of Saurashtra and Kutch with heavy rainfall and storm surge. The cyclone started making landfall near Jakhau Port from 6.30 pm on Thursday and the entire cyclone moved into the coast by 2.30 am, an official said. Rescue on- According to National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF), no lives were lost after the cyclone entered the land in Gujarat. However, the force said 23 people were injured. It also revealed that power supply was disrupted in about 1,000 villages. Read more...

Pakistan spared-Pakistan was largely spared the full force of the cyclone. People from Sindh's coastal city of Keti who were evacuated as a precautionary measure were sent back after now returning to their homes after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) announced the character of the cyclone as weakened. Gujarat CM reviews situation- Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel assessed the impact of cyclone Biparjoy from the State Emergency Operation Center in Gandhinagar. The officials apprised him of the damages that have been reported across the state due to the incessant heavy rains.

To weaken as 'deep depression'- The Weather Office said the severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy will weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm around noon over Saurashtra and Kutch region. It said the cyclone Biparjoy was centered in the land area about 70 km north-north east of Jahkhau port and 50 km north east of Naliya. The cyclonic storm will further weaken into a deep depression later in the evening, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a tweet. Two killed-A cattle-rearer duo of father and son died while trying to save their goats stuck in a flooded ravine in Bhavnagar district on Thursday, PTI reported. It further reported that howling winds yanked hundreds of trees, damaged communication towers, toppled electricity poles, flung solid objects, and raised dusty squalls that virtually resulted in zero visibility in some areas. The storm also plunged many areas into darkness as electric poles were uprooted. “We had lost two lives (father-son duo) before the landfall. After landfall, we did not lose a single life,” NDRF DG Atul Karwal said. Read more...

Cyclone weakening in land-IMD Director Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said: "Cyclone Biporjoy moved northeastwards and crossed the Saurashtra-Kutch adjoining Pakistan coast close to the Jakhau port, Gujarat. The cyclone has now moved from sea to land and is centered towards Saurashtra-Kutch.

Heavy rain forecast for Rajasthan-The intensity of the cyclone has reduced to 105-115 kmph. The category has changed from very severe cyclonic storm (VSCS) to severe cyclonic storm (SCS). There may be heavy rains in Rajasthan on June 16 (Friday). The intensity of Cyclone Biparjoy has reduced from the 'very severe' to 'severe' category on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday after the storm made landfall in coastal areas of Gujarat, ANI quoted Mohapatra as saying.

21 more trains cancelled, 8 short terminate/originate- Indian Railways gears up for Cyclone Biparjoy with utmost preparedness! Real-time monitoring is being done at the divisional and zonal levels by DRM and GM through the control room and at the Railway Board level by higher officials through the war room, the Railways said in a tweet.

Western Railway listed out 21 trains running between Palanpur, Bhuj, Dadar, Bandra Terminus, Bhanvad, Porbandar, Okha, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Veraval, Amreli, Junagadh, and Delvada. Modi speaks to Bhupendra-In a telephonic conversation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday night to enquir about the situation in the state following the landfall of the powerful cyclone. Modi wanted to know the measures put in place by the state administration for the safety of wild animals, especially the lions in the Gir forest.

PM Modi held a telephonic conversation with me and took all the details about the current situation of Gujarat following the landfall of cyclone Biparjoy. He also enquired about the steps taken by the government for the safety of all wild animals, including the lions of Gir Forest, Patel wrote in twitter.

Road clearance work underway: According to Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel till now there is no report of loss of human lives in the Kachchh district. Currently, Mundra, Jakhua, Koteshwar, Lakphat and Naliya are witnessing high windspeed and rainfall. Road clearance work is underway in many parts of the coastal districts of Gujarat.
