Ahmedabad cops overturn fruits, vegetable carts, inspector suspended

In the video on-duty, cops are seen charging at the humble vendors. One of the cops is seen hitting a cart with his stick and then overturning a cart. The Gujarat DGP has suspended that police officer for beating up vegetable vendors and overturning their carts during the lockdown period.

Ahmadabad: Gujarat DGP Shivanand Jha on Tuesday suspended a police inspector for beating up vegetable vendors and overturning their carts during the lockdown period near Kishannagar in Ahmedabad.

The accused cop has been identified as V K Choudhury. He was posted in Kishannagar police station.

A few police personnel in Ahmedabad’s Krishnanagar have been caught on camera overturning carts laden with vegetables and fruits while forcing the vendors to flee with their possessions.

In the video on-duty, cops can be seen charging at the vendors. Choudhury along with other police personnel can be seen hitting vegetable carts with their sticks and then overturning the carts fully stocked with vegetables. The policemen were seen on the video wantonly beating up the vegetable vendors with sticks and overturning their carts.

After the video went viral on social media, the matter came to the notice of higher police officials and an inquiry was announced. The DGP Shivanand Jha announced the suspension of inspector Choudhury.

The DGP Jha had also given instructions to the policemen in the state to deal peacefully with the people during the lockdown period. The video of police resorting to violence against vegetable vendors has caused much embarrassment to the authorities, sources said.
