Facebook takes down Jamia shooter's profile

Social media platform Facebook has pulled down the profile of the man who shot at anti-CAA protesters outside Jamia Milia University in Delhi on Thursday.

The attacker opened fire at the anti-CAA march conducted by Jamia Coordination Committee in which a student of Jamia Millia Islamia was injured.

The attacker had gone live on Facebook moments before he opened fire during an anti-CAA protest, injuring a Jamia Milia Islamia Student named Shadab Farooq.

After the incident, Facebook took down his profile and issued the statement, saying: "There is no place on Facebook for those who commit this kind of violence. We have removed the gunman's Facebook account and are removing any content that praises, supports or represents the gunman or the shooting as soon as we identify it."

Jamia Coordination Committee's statement against the accused, condems the act

The Jamia Coordination Committee issued a statement regarding the incident where a gunman fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters in the city's Jamia Millia Islamia University on Thursday, injuring a student, before calmly walking away while waving the firearm above his head and shouting 'Yeh lo aazadi' amid heavy police presence in the area, witnesses said. 

The committee in the press release demanded action against the accused and against Union Minister Anurag Thakur for his 'desh ke gaddaaron ko' slogan at a poll rally on 27 January.

Jamia firing: Case of attempt to murder against shooter

An FIR was registered under the Arms Act and a case of attempt to murder lodged against the youth who opened fire on Thursday at the protesters who had taken out an anti-CAA march from Shaheen Bagh to Rajghat.

According to sources, the case has been registered on the basis of the statement of the injured Jamia student Shadab who sustained a bullet injury on his arm after the shooter opened fire at the gathering.

Jamia firing: Teachers' association calls emergency meeting

 The Jamia Teachers Association (JTA) condemned the incident of firing on a university student on Thursday and called an emergency meeting of its General Body to discuss the "scenario around the university".

"We strongly condemn the incident of blatant pistol firing on students of Jamia Millia Islamia in the presence of police, injuring a student. The incident occurred on the road passing through the university amid marching of peaceful protestors," Majid Jamil, secretary, JTA, said in a statement.

"We demand strong action against the culprit and book him under attempt to murder case immediately. Examinations were being conducted in the university at that moment which, however, completed successfully. An emergency General Body Meeting (GBM) of JTA has been called on Friday at 11 am to discuss the matter of present scenario around the university," he added.

Reacting to the Jamia firing incident, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday asked Home Minister Amit Shah to take care of the "deteriorating" law and order situation in Delhi.

 Kejriwal's statement came through a tweet replying to a post by Shah in which the home minister said he has directed Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take strict action in the case. 

"What is happening in Delhi? The law and order is deteriorating. Please take care of Delhi's law and order," Kejriwal said in the tweet.

Congress MP Manish Tiwari blamed the BJP government for creating an atmosphere of hatred in the country.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari said that "the hate which killed Mahatma Gandhi is ruling the country and the firing which happened in Jamia is saddening but it is the result of the environment of hatred which is being built from last one month."

"The statements made by the BJP are fuelling this environment and this is to polarise Delhi which is done by people who are sitting at the top level in this government," he said.

Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday directed Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take the strictest action in the case of a man firing a pistol at protesters near the Jamia Millia Islamia University.

The home minister also said the Central government will not tolerate such incidents and the guilty will not be spared.

"I have spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner on the incident of firing in Delhi and have directed him to take strictest action," he said in a tweet.

SIT seeks public's help in probe on anti-CAA violence in Delhi

Delhi: The investigation over the rioting in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act in the national capital is gaining momentum as the Delhi Police SIT, constituted to investigate the violence and stone-pelting, has appealed to the public to cooperate in the probe.

The long march towards Rajghat by Jamia Millia Islamia students to protest against the new citizenship law (CAA), here on Thursday, was stopped by the police near the Holy Family Hospital after a man opened fire on the protesters.

A man fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters in the city's Jamia Millia Islamia University on Thursday, injuring a student, before calmly walking away while waving the firearm above his head and shouting Yeh lo aazadi amid heavy police presence in the area, witnesses said. 

The man was subsequently overpowered by police and taken into custody. 

The entire drama, which triggered panic in the area, was captured by television cameras that showed the man in light coloured pants and a dark jacket, walking away on an empty road barricaded by police, turning around and shouting at the protesters in Hindi, take this independence.

JCC issues statement, Shooter charged with attempt of murder

Delhi: An armed man was detained on Thursday after he brandished a pistol at Jamia Millia Islamia students demonstrating against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act on Thursday, police said.

The man, who is yet to be identified, was overpowered by protesters. A student appeared to have been injured in the incident, which led to panic in the Jamia area.

There was heavy police presence and several media crews in place when the incident took place.

The students were heading from Jamia to Mahatma Gandhi's memorial Rajghat.

Congress MP Manish Tiwari blamed the BJP government for creating an atmosphere of hatred in the country.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari said that "the hate which killed Mahatma Gandhi is ruling the country and the firing which happened in Jamia is saddening but it is the result of the environment of hatred which is being built from last one month."

"The statements made by the BJP are fuelling this environment and this is to polarise Delhi which is done by people who are sitting at the top level in this government," he said.

Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday directed Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take the strictest action in the case of a man firing a pistol at protesters near the Jamia Millia Islamia University.

The home minister also said the Central government will not tolerate such incidents and the guilty will not be spared.

"I have spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner on the incident of firing in Delhi and have directed him to take strictest action," he said in a tweet.

SIT seeks public's help in probe on anti-CAA violence in Delhi

Delhi: The investigation over the rioting in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act in the national capital is gaining momentum as the Delhi Police SIT, constituted to investigate the violence and stone-pelting, has appealed to the public to cooperate in the probe.

Special Investigation Team chief and DCP (Crime Branch) Rajesh Dev has appealed to people to hand over all information and evidence related to stone pelting to the SIT so that the investigation can progress.

Jamia students' march to Rajghat stopped after firing

The long march towards Rajghat by Jamia Millia Islamia students to protest against the new citizenship law (CAA), here on Thursday, was stopped by the police near the Holy Family Hospital after a man opened fire on the protesters.

Several march participants said the man who opened fire was a "follower of Nathuram Godse". "We are following the ideology of Gandhi, but the same ideology that killed Mahatma wanted to kill us," said a participant.

Jamia firing 'direct result' of remarks made by BJP leaders during campaigning in Delhi: D Raja

CPI general secretary D Raja on Thursday said the incident of firing at Jamia Milia Islamia was a "direct result" of discretionary comments made by BJP leaders while campaigning for the Delhi Assembly polls.

Raja said that it was unfortunate that such an incident had happened on the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

"Jamia firing incident a direct result of provocative statements made by BJP leaders during campaigning in Delhi. BJP leader Anurag Thakur should be arrested for his comments urging crowds to raise slogan of shoot the traitors," Raja said.

Delhi Metro closes 3 metro stations after a man fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters in the city's Jamia Millia Islamia University, injuring a student. 

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has closed Jama Masjid, ITO and Delhi Gate stations.

Chinmoy Biswal, DCP (southeast), said the students wanted to take out a march from Jamia to Rajghat but were denied permission.

"They were being repeatedly told that the protest should be carried out peacefully. We had barricaded the road just before the Holy Family hospital. Meanwhile, a person was seen in the crowd who waved something which appeared to be a weapon."

"We have detained him and are interrogating him. One person has also been injured," Biswal said.

A man fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters in the city's Jamia Millia Islamia University on Thursday, injuring a student, before calmly walking away while waving the firearm above his head and shouting Yeh lo aazadi amid heavy police presence in the area, witnesses said. 

The man was subsequently overpowered by police and taken into custody. 

The entire drama, which triggered panic in the area, was captured by television cameras that showed the man in light coloured pants and a dark jacket, walking away on an empty road barricaded by police, turning around and shouting at the protesters in Hindi, take this independence.

JCC issues statement, Shooter charged with attempt of murder

Delhi: An armed man was detained on Thursday after he brandished a pistol at Jamia Millia Islamia students demonstrating against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act on Thursday, police said.

The man, who is yet to be identified, was overpowered by protesters. A student appeared to have been injured in the incident, which led to panic in the Jamia area.

There was heavy police presence and several media crews in place when the incident took place.

The students were heading from Jamia to Mahatma Gandhi's memorial Rajghat.
