New Delhi: Expressing concerns over the agrarian crisis in the country, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Tuesday, warned the officials, along with the scientists, over its impact on the Indian economy.

Tomar, while speaking at a meeting organised by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR), asserted that the country's economy, which is primarily dependent on agriculture, is facing a horde of issue, with the major one being decline in the area of cultivation land.

This, he said, was reportedly prompting farmers to search for alternative professions and dissuade the upcoming generations from taking up farming.

"The prevailing issues in agriculture have assumed centre stage on a global level. If similar situation continues for long, it will give rise to several issues. People will have money, but there will be no food to buy," he added.

He further emphasised on the need for redefining the priorities of ICAR, to suit the present challenges via new dimensions, and reiterated the Modi government's push in increasing the farmer's income.

According to experts, the goal of doubling the farmer's income is not possible by 2022, owing to the current growth rate (in agriculture).

"The government is working towards making agriculture profitable to achieve their goal of doubling the farmer's income by 2022," he maintained.
