New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the comment made by Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen regarding ‘Jai Shri Ram’ not being part of Kolkata’s culture.
On Friday, Sen had said that Jai Shri Ram was nowadays used "to beat up people" across the country and "has no association with Bengali culture".
While talking to ETV Bharat, BJP's national spokesperson Sudesh Verma said, "Amartya Sen is not aware of the fact that people of Bengal chant 'Hari Bol' which is associated with Lord Ram."
"If Amartya Sen wants to get involved in politics, he should do it openly," added Verma. He also said that it was the TMC and not the BJP who tried to divide people using religion.
West Bengal Chief Minister had reacted angrily to 'Jai Shri Ram' slogans at Bhatpara in North 24 Parganas district in May.
