New Delhi: The security has been tightened at Delhi borders after Intelligence agencies alerted the Delhi Police saying that the ongoing farmers' protest may be sabotaged by Pakistan-based Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Acting on the alert, the Delhi Police have tightened security and made the necessary arrangements.
Speaking to the media about the protest, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader said that today (June 26) marks the seventh month of the protest and a large number of farmers have gathered in the national capital in the last two days. "We will continue our protest, the government can initiate talks whenever it wants. People of Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar have come to Delhi by tractors and within a month or two, people from other states too will follow the suit," he said, adding that a memorandum will be given to Governors of all states regarding the issues of farmers.
However, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that farmer unions should end their agitation as a large part of the country stands in support of these laws. If the farmer unions have any objection to any provision of the laws, then the Government of India is ready to discuss it with them, he added.
It is worth mentioning that farmers have been protesting at Delhi's borders since November 2020, seeking the withdrawal of the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Farmers' (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. They have also been demanding a new law to guarantee a minimum support price for crops. However, the Centre has described the laws as pro-farmer.
