New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought Haryana government's response over the reported flattening of Aravalli hills in order to make approach road to farmhouses in Bandhwari.

The bench led by Justice Arun Mishra took cognizance of the Times of India report according to which "it's the second disappearance of a hill in the Gurugram section of the ranges to come to light since 2018".

The apex court was informed in 2018 that one fourth of the Aravallis disappeared in Rajasthan. Moreover, there are around 50 farmhouses in Bandhwari near the hills and reportedly the construction is banned in the area as it is a natural conservation zone.

Earlier on 1 March 2019, slamming the Haryana government, the Supreme Court had stayed the implementation of a new state law allowing construction work in the Aravalli region.

The Haryana Assembly in the same month had passed an amendment to the Punjab land Preservation Act, 1900, opening thousands of acres of land under the Aravalli and Shivalik ranges for real estate development and mining. However, the apex court in an earlier order had said that there should not be any construction in the Aravalli area.
