New Delhi: A delegation of Opposition leaders submitted memorandum to President of India, raising serious concerns over the investigation by Delhi Police in the matter of Delhi riots occurred earlier this year.
The memorandum submitted by Congress leader Ahmed Patel, CPI's D Raja, CPI(M)'s Sitaram Yechury, DMK's Kanimozi and RJD's Manoj Jha questioned the role played by Delhi Police itself during the violence and also alleged that the Police is "harassing" and attempting to "falsely implicate" activists who took part in anti-CAA/NRC protests.
"The way in which chargesheet has been presented, it shows that there a deep conspiracy in it. Those who should be held accountable for orchestrating violence have been given protection, while those who tried to help people, there is an attempt to book them under charges," said Ahmed Patel.
He further added, "We have asked the President to institute an inquiry into this investigation whether all this is happening under certain instructions to oppress the voice of opposition. If this continues, rioters will get encouraged."
The memorandum filed to the President of India stated, "The notable silence in the chargesheets on role of leaders associated with BJP, who gave inflammatory speeches, raises serious concern about the impartiality of probe".
The Opposition leaders alleged that Delhi Police has turned a "blind eye" towards the role of it's own personnel and BJP leaders in violence, at the same time pursued a line of enquiry of criminalising the protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and portraying them as a conspiracy, which resulted in the riots of the Delhi.
"The entire investigation appears to be aimed at arriving at a premeditated theory about a conspiracy propounded by the Home Minister in Lok Sabha on March 2020, before any investigation had even begin into the riots," it stated.
Recently, in a supplementary chargesheet, Delhi Police has named Sitaram Yechury along with other intellectuals, academicians and activists.
"We've appealed to the President as the custodian of the Constitution, this sought of a motivation direction in which the Police investigation is going on. That has to be stopped. A proper thorough enquiry needs to be conducted, which must be done by Hon' President," he said.
Demanding an enquiry from President of India, the memorandum stated, "A credible and unbiased probe is crucial to restore public trust in law and order machinery of the state. The investigation cannot be allowed to become fishing and roving expedition aimed at causing a chilling effect on dissent and protest in the country."
