No trade pacts at cost of India's interest: Piyush Goyal

Piyush Goyal on Monday said that no agreement or trade pact on commerce will be made at the cost of India's interests, sovereign requirements and interests of the citizens.

New Delhi: Union Minister for Commerce and Industries Piyush Goyal, during his interaction with diaspora in London, emphasised on Modi administrations' future plans of putting country's interest first before signing of any trade agreement.

The Union Minister was responding to a query on the ongoing Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership negotiations. He said, "India is working for a fair deal which protects countries interest and does not allow unfair market access."

He further went on to say that from now no agreement or trade on commerce will be at the cost of India's interest, the country's sovereign requirements and interest of the citizens.

RCEP is a proposed regional economic integration agreement among the ASEAN countries and its 6 free trade agreement partners which includes Australia, New Zealand, Japan-China, South Korea and India.

Union Commerce Minister's remark makes it clear that India is looking to safeguard its interest in the ongoing mega-regional agreement among the 16 Asia Pacific countries which includes China as well.
