Motorcyclist dies, pillion rider injured after hit by car in Delhi's Kasturba Gandhi Marg; driver arrested

The driver who is said to have been in intoxicated condition rammed the biker and dragged him for around 500 metres leading to his on the spot death.

New Delhi: A motorcylist died while the pillion rider was injured after the two-wheeler was rammed by a speeding car in Kasturba Gandhi Marg area of Central Delhi, police said on Monday. Police have arrested the driver of the car. The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old youth Dipanshu Verma, a resident of Dharampura Extension of Gandhi Nagar, while the injured Mukul Verma is a resident of Chandan Nagar, Delhi.

Police said that the accused driver was in an intoxicated state at the time of the accident. A police official said that the incident took place late night on Saturday. It is said that the accused driver identified as Harneet Singh Chawla rammed the two-wheeler from behind in Kasturba Gandhi Marg area of Delhi late night on Saturday.

After hitting the two-wheeler, accused Chawla dragged the biek rider Dipanshu Verma for about 500 metres leading to his on the spot death. In the accident, the pillion rider Mukund Verma, 20, was injured and has been shifted to the nearby hospital for treatment. Soon after the the accident, the police rushed to the spot and arrested the accused driver of the car.

Besides the driver's arrest, the car has also been seized by the police. Police have registered a case and started further investigation into the mishap, a police officer said. The incident has brought back the grim memories of a similar accident on New Year's eve when scooty rider Anjali was first hit by a car, then dragged for 12 km, due to which she died in the accident.

Five accused in the car were arrested in the case. Later the names of two more accused came to the fore. On Monday, video surfaced in which a car travelling from Delhi's Ashram Chowk to Nizamuddin Dargah was seen driving for around two to three kilometres with a person hanging on the bonnet. Police have arrested the accused driver in the incident.
