New Delhi: Barakhamba Police arrested a Chhattisgarh resident with fake currency notes worth Rs 15,000 in New Delhi on Thursday.
The accused Jogeshwar Ram, a resident of Balrampur Chhattisgarh used to print the counterfeit currency notes in his hometown in order to live a comfortable life, Eish Singhal, deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) said.
As per police, the accused used to work for a printing company in Chhattisgarh. He left his job one-and-a-half-year ago after which he started printing fake currency to earn money easily.
"127 notes in the denomination of Rs 100 and 12 notes in the denomination of Rs 200 were recovered from the accused," the DCP said, adding that the total currency is worth Rs 15,100.
Ram had come to Delhi on Wednesday on a tour and spend the fake currency on shopping.
On Thursday, he hired an auto-rickshaw from Chelmsford Road to visit Minto Road. On reaching his destination, Ram handed over a fake currency note of Rs 100 to the auto driver.
After the driver examined the note properly, he found it to be fake. When the driver asked for a valid note, the accused began running, police said.
"The policemen on duty in the area began chasing Ram after the auto-driver raised an alarm. As soon as he found himself surrounded by police officials, he threw his wallet in the drain but it was recovered later," the officer said.
"98 fake notes of Rs 100 and 9 fake notes of Rs 200 were recovered from his pocket while a total of 32 counterfeit notes in the denomination of Rs 100 and 200 were recovered from his wallet," he added.
The accused has now been sent to 7 days police remand. During this time, police will probe the identity of Ram's accomplices and will search the entire unit in Chhattisgarh where these notes are printed.
