LNJP acquires multi-utility machine for plasmapheresis

Lok Nayak Hospital has acquired a machine for plasmapheresis and would now be able to treat many more patients with ease. It also plans to setup the second plasma bank after the first one at the state-run Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS).

New Delhi: With the national capital improving its recovery rate from coronavirus disease, Lok Nayak Hospital, from where over three thousand COVID-19 patients recovered, has got a multi-utility machine which would help the hospital to perform plasmapheresis.

Recently, the Delhi Government opened the country's first plasma bank at the state-run Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), and now it's being said the LNJP would be the second hospital in the national capital after the ILBS to start a plasma bank.

LNJP Medical Director Dr Suresh Kumar told ETV Bharat here that the machine acquired would help the hospital in a great manner and prove highly beneficial for the patients.

"We would be able to handle 10 to 15 donors a day and in case we run the machine 24 hours a day then 30 donors could donate plasma, which could save the lives of many," he said, adding that a donor could save two lives.

He said the hospital earlier provided plasma therapy to 20 patients and now permission for 200 more has been granted, out of which 40 patients have already been at the much-needed therapy.

The doctor said arrangements are being made to smoothen the entire process so that more and more donors could come forward to donate their plasma to save lives.

Also, the hospital has hired three expert counsellors who will encourage patients to donate plasma and tell them it is a safe process, according to the official. These counsellors will call up patients, who have recovered from coronavirus, and explain to them the therapy, he said.

Reports said there would be a separate entry for those coming to donate plasma in the hospital. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is expected to inaugurate the plasma bank.

The LNJP is the largest COVID facility in Delhi.
