SC reserves verdict on plea of National Conference against denial of 'plough' symbol for Ladakh Hill Council polls

The Supreme Court (SC) of India has reserved its verdict on plea of National Conference against denial of plough' symbol to its candidates contesting Ladakh Hill Council polls.

New Delhi : The Supreme Court (SC) of India has reserved its verdict on plea of National Conference against denial of plough' symbol to its candidates contesting Ladakh Hill Council polls. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah said that the judgement will be pronounced on September 6.

Earlier, the bench had termed as unfair the act of the Union Territory administration of not granting the 'plough' poll symbol to the party for the hill council elections despite the order of the high court in this regard, according to a PTI report.

After getting separate identity, the Union Territory administration of Lakdah has initiated various measures for its self-rule. The administration has removed Urdu as a test language for various posts in the Revenue department. The Ladakh region is comprised of two districts, which are Leh and Kargil. As per the the available statistics, the population ratio of the region is 55 percent Muslims and 45 Buddhists.

Amidst this, the ruling Bharathiya Janata Party leaders at the Centre have expressed concerns that some people were unjustly trying to deprive the Ladakh region of its newly acquired Union Territory status. Rival political parties are making a strong bid to increase their presence in the region and score maximum seats in the coming hill council polls.
