Kejriwal to skip Holi celebrations in wake of violence, coronavirus threat

Talking to reporters after a review meeting with Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on the preparedness for COVID-19, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he would skip Holi celebrations this year in wake of the coronavirus outbreak and the Delhi violence.

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday reiterated that he will not participate in Holi celebrations this year, owing to the coronavirus outbreak and the northeast Delhi violence.

"I will not celebrate Holi this time due to Coronavirus and recent Delhi violence that shocked the county," Kejriwal said while speaking to reporters here.

Kejriwal urged people not to participate in large public gatherings

He also advised people to avoid large gatherings during Holi.

Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Health Minister Satyendra Kumar Jain, and senior officials today held a review meeting with Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan over the coronavirus outbreak.

"We have reviewed the present situation in Delhi over coronavirus. We have discussed on the necessary actions need to be taken to counter the outbreak," Kejriwal said after the meeting.

He said both the Central and Delhi governments are working jointly against COVID-19. "Because of our united efforts, we have been able to contain the disease in Delhi as of now," Kejriwal said.

He added that apart from initiating sensitisation measures, the Delhi government has also been distributing pamphlets among people as part of an awareness drive against COVID-19.

Referring to the scarcity of face masks in the market, Kejriwal said that there was no need to wear masks "unnecessarily".

"People need not create hue and cry over masks. People who are healthy need not wear masks. Only infected people and who are suffering from any kind of disease should wear masks," he said.

Kejriwal further informed that the Delhi government has also been sanitising DTDC buses as well as the Metro.
