New Delhi: The coronavirus pandemic has stirred death, destruction and upheaval across the world. Not to forget the emotional and mental mayhem Covid-19 has caused to millions of people, especially those living with an anxiety disorder.

Capsized travel plans, indefinite isolation, panic over scarce re-sources and information overload could be a recipe for unchecked anxiety and feelings of isolation.

In this regard, ETV Bharat interacted with New Delhi-based Psychiatrist Rani Bhatia and discussed how life will be back on track in this uncertain time.

"Due to coronavirus pandemic, the way of living of the people in lockdown has changed completely. People used to go to their work on normal days, meet friends and go out on holidays, all that has changed. People are at home with their loved ones, despite this, there is depression among people that what will happen next and in which way the life will be back on track?," Dr Bhatia said.

"In India, many people are in anxiety and depression. This coincides with the bleak state of our current world. Under lockdown, there has been a rise in unemployment along with a grave disruption in the normal lives of people across the country. Naturally, these factors have caused a spike in mental illnesses like anxiety and depression," she said.

"There have been many changes in the lifestyle of the people during this coronavirus imposed lockdown. Many people have become financially weak. Before this, a middle-class person was incoming Rs 40 to 50 thousand per month but due to the pandemic, it has come down to Rs 10 to 20 thousand. People have no income, and it remains intact at the expense. Due to this also people are moving towards anxiety and depression. But at such a time it is important that people should keep themselves busy in some work and they should keep thinking positively about their lifestyle," she said.

"People can learn new things by using this time properly. Those who are feeling depressed, they should do exercise, yoga and keep themself happy. As a psychiatrist, I am advising people that make yourself busy in many activities. If you are getting holidays, then people should spend more time with their loved ones and move forward not with positivity," she added.
