New Delhi: Delhi Police on Thursday arrested a Ph.D student of Jamia Milia Islamia for his alleged role in communal riots that took place in the national capital in February last.

The 35-year-old old student, identified as Miran Haider, is also the head of the Delhi youth wing of the Rashtriya Janata Dal.

Reacting to the arrest, the university students expressed unhappiness and alleged that during the coronavirus crisis, the police was troubling the students unnecessarily.

They said Miran Haider was being framed in a false case.

The riots left over 50 persons dead and hundreds others injured in several north-eastern parts of the city during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The violence broke out between those who supported the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and those who opposed the amended law that fast-tracks the process of giving citizenship to persecuted non-Muslims minorities from three neighbouring countries - Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
