New Delhi: The Government has decided to revise the National Population Register (NPR) by September 2020 and set the foundation for rolling out the programme of collection information of every individual usually residing within the jurisdiction of a local registrar. However, the initiative has racked up questions of pan-India NRC.
According to reports, a Gazette notification issued recently has said that the central government decided to prepare and update the population register and the fieldwork for house to house enumeration throughout the country except Assam for collection of information relating to all persons who are usually residing within the jurisdiction of local registrar shall be undertaken between April 1, 2020 to September 30, 2020.
"That's a plan to prepare the NPC by 2020. It will enumerate citizens who are residing in a certain area for at least 6 months. After that, it's a call of the government through Registrar General of India (RGI) to look at a common NRC for the country," said strategic affairs expert Subimal Bhattacharjee to ETV Bharat.
He said that for Assam was a different case, as the people were demanding an NRC.
"For a pan-India NRC, Government needs to come to a consensus," said Bhattacharjee.
He, however, said that the NRC process led to digitalisation of legacy data, which could be used in future for determining personal data and revise the list periodically.
The NPR is a register of usual residents of the country. It is being prepared at the local (village-sub town), sub-district, district, state and national level under provisions of the Citizenship Act 1955 and the Citizenship (Registration of India and issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.
