Fire breaks out in West Delhi's Fun Cinema, no injuries

'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' was being screened when the fire broke out. There were 67 people inside the hall at that time.

New Delhi: In a chilling reminder of Green Park's Uphaar Cinema fire tragedy, a fire broke out inside the projector room of Fun Cinema in West Delhi's Moti Nagar on Sunday. There were 67 people in the hall at that time. No injuries were reported, fire officials said.

The incident occurred when 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' was being screened in auditorium 3 of the hall located on the third floor. Suddenly, smoke started billowing out from the projector room. "The fire had broken out in the air-conditioner installed inside the projector room along with the electrical panel," a fire official said.

The cinema hall authorities informed the fire department. Seven fire tenders were pressed into service and the fire was brought under control after an hour, fire official said.

Sixty-seven people were present inside the hall watching 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' when the incident occurred. All were evacuated safely, he said. The incident led to chaos as the entire hall was being filled with dense smoke due to the fire.

Fire officials said that the fire was caused due to short circuit. The air conditioner and the electrical panel caught fire and the entire projector room was filled with smoke. The screening was stopped immediately and the security guard took people out through the emergency gate. Also, the local police helped the fire officials in the rescue operation.

The incidents reminds of the major fire that broke out in a cinema hall in south Delhi 26 years back. On June 13, 1997, 59 people died and over 100 were injured in a fire that broke out at Uphaar Cinema while film 'Border' was being screened.
