New Delhi: A drunken man on Monday rammed his car into the iron gate of the Safdarjung tomb complex causing damage to the gate and the adjoining stone signage. The man received injuries and was rushed to the RML hospital for treatment.

The incident happened around 3 a.m. when a Swift Maruti car came from the Lodhi road side and rammed into the main entrance (Iron) gate of the UNESCO World Heritage site and further hit the stone notice board. Both were brought to the ground by the high-speed impact.

"The 32-year-old driver of the car, Vijay Bahri, a resident of the LIG DDA flat in Delhi's Ramp area, was in an inebriated state and, hence, had lost control over his vehicle. No one was injured and the driver was rushed to the RML hospital, but he also didn't sustain any serious injury," a senior police officer said.

An FIR under sections 279 IPC, section 3, the prevention of damage to public property Act 1984, and 185 MV Act has been registered.

"No damage to the main tomb has taken place," the officer added.
